Era Diferente
Having produced the first ever corrido (ballad) covering the topic of gay love, Los Tigres del Norte provides support to a community that continues to face rejection. While many are surprised to hear that for the first time ever in their concerts, the band's leader, Jorge Hernández says that he is proud to support the gay community. Los Tigres Del Norte are generally known for making stories, stories that tell the reality that society lives. “It is evident that the gay community has a great future in sight, each year they have been progressing and fighting for what they believe in,” said Hernández in a recent telephone interview. The singer revealed that many years ago the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transexual) community had asked him to translate their story into a corrido. He also went on to say that for many years he has been waiting for the right story dedicated to the LGBT community. He wanted it to be something special, something very beautiful for the gay community.
Hernández had this friend that would tell them, “why not make a story about us and the day to day struggles that we go through, for instance, the sexism in different parts of the U.S., and how the LGBT community is unwanted.” The song titled “Era Diferente”, finally came to them by surprise while they were recording their most recent album “Realidades”. The song was written by Mexican Composer Manuel Eduardo Toscano, who had previously worked with the greats of the norteño music genre. The song talks about a young women that is coveted by many men, but she is in love with her best friend who is a female. The guys that wanted her make bets to see who can get her, but no man can ever win her over. She is so different than any other woman, and never in her life was she interested in a male partner.
“ When i heard the song i was surprised, it didn't have any word that would offend the community and it was a very beautiful song as well. We fell in love with it. We thought, “well this is the right time to say what we have to say, so we did it, and it turned out excellent.” Said Jorge Hernandez. “For the LGBT fans and their family members, the support you guys give Los Tigres Del Norte is very beautiful and important. Fans like this contribute greatly to acceptance," said Monica Trasandes, Spanish media director of GLAAD, an advocacy organization representing the LGBT community. Last month GLAAD awarded the band a special recognition award for their initiative to the community in creating the first corrido to cover the topic of gay love.
